Williams & Humbert is one of the bodegas with the most history and tradition in the production of Sherry. The firm owns its own vineyards in the best areas of Jerez Superior and the bodegas combine the best possible conditions for these special and singular wines to age in our unique system of criaderas and soleras. The company, which is 100% family owned, treasures the experience of over 130 years dedicated to the production of fine Sherry with such famous brands as Canasta, Pando and Dry Sack. There is a long track record of constant innovation as shown by the work which has gone into the Añada (vintage) wines, with the oldest and largest collection in Jerez, and the spirits.
Gran Duque de Alba brandy is the result of the distillation of high quality wines aged in the solera system typical of the area. Fundamental to this process is the wood, not only because it consists of American oak butts, but also because these butts have previously contained the exceptional Sherries of Williams & Humbert. In this way, depending on the type of wine aged in these butts, they will confer on the brandy singular characteristics and nuances: “Oloroso Muy Viejo” for Gran Duque de Alba, Pedro Ximénez “Don Guido” for Gran Duque de Alba XO and Palo Cortado “Dos Cortados” for Gran Duque de Alba Oro. These brands have won international prizes, and in the case of the latter, its age of over 20 years is certified by the Consejo Regulador. The minimum average ageing period for these brandies is: 10-12 years for GDA, 15 years for GDA XO and 20 years for GDA Oro.
Its gold-flecked mahogany colour, the complexity of its aromas of “wine esters” and plentiful balsamic notes denote suitably long ageing in oak. On the palate it is smooth with a gentle sweet note and it is full bodied with vanilla and toasted notes and a long satisfying finish.
A glass of this singularly old, noble and complex brandy pays homage to the palate and to pleasure itself either on one’s own or in good company. Gran Duque de Alba Solera Gran Reserva can be enjoyed equally on its own or with ice.
It is an ideal brandy for adventurous harmonies with mature cheese, black chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, turrón and even with spicy flavours typical of Mexican cuisine.
